An act of 1733 obliged a mother to declare that she was pregnant with an 
illegitimate child and to reveal the father's name. Parish officers would 
then attempt to obtain a bond of indemnity from the father which would 
provide for maintenance to be paid, either as a lump sum or by instalments.
