John, I have been scanning the Dyersville book looking for Curtin, Pitman &
Walters without any luck so far. Is Samuelson a Wedmore name? Asking because
there were Samuelsons in my hometown in Iowa and have not heard that name
often--as far as I know there was not a relationship in our family.
Farley is in Dubuque county as is Dyersville so very likely they did have ties
to the Wedmore group in Dyersville. If they married in 1895 that is after most
of my family had gone on across the state to western Iowa. And the Dyersville
history is of the early settlement in the 1840's.
Lyn Nunn asked about newspapers or how else word spread of these settlements in
the states. In the Dyersville History, page 78, I'll copy a few paragraphs:
"While the young Dyer family was thus setting the stage at Dyersville for a
noteworthy English colonization scheme, there was in Somersetshire much
excitement and activity about departing for America. James Dyer, Sr served as
the spokesman (to his son) for those planning to migrate...forwarded directions
and reports...English inquires as to what kind and how much dry goods
merchandise they should bring, what tools, what was the nearest & cheapest route
from New York to Dyersville...they requested a map or plan of the sections to be
purchased for them"---there is much more and it states these questions were
mailed on March 19, 1848 with about 60 persons reported ready to emigrate from
Wedmore in April. However, many were unable to complete plans in the end--
Does say "Augustine Day of Meare sold his premises but...was afflicted in both
arms so was not permitted by his Dr to undertake the journey" (some rewording) &
Arthur Cox, a coal merchant from Highbridge also had problems with clearing the
title of his property.
Think DAY & COX have been in some recent inquires--Mary Jackes isn't it DAYs
that you are looking for?
Anyway, think that may answer some of your question, Lyn. Does anyone else know
of how the Wedmore folks in the 1840's learned where to go in the states? Some
of ours went to Canada first or to Burlington, Racine Co, Wisconsin before going
on to Dyersville.
