I'm afraid I have no information to give, but I'm impressed by the site,
and I'm curious. I recently found a beautiful photograph of my great
grandmother, Mary Day, and decided I wanted to know more about her. She
was brought up in Minnesota, and chose to be returned there for burial, at
Graceville.
I believe that Mary's father, Daniel, went to North America with his older
brother, Arthur, and his sister-in-law, Elizabeth Wall, who are buried in
St. Charles, Minnesota. It seems likely that they left England in the
1840s. Certainly, they had already purchased farm lands - straight-out
cash sales, it seems - by 1853.
The names Day and Wall seem to indicate a Wedmore/Weare connection - so I'm
just interested, and willing to do any transcribing requested - just for fun.
I note a comment in a history of the area about depopulation, and about
emigration being encouraged after the repeal of the Corn Laws. I wonder if
there are lists of those given money or assistance?
It would be interesting to know who left in the 1840s, if they travelled
together, how they did in their new lives. I am very interested in the
ways people migrate to North America and Australasia. Make an interesting
book?
