Hi again
Firstly, re. Wedmore women - no, Lynn, I of course realised immediately =
the women mentioned in my last email were, of course, entirely unrelated =
to our particular families. (!!!!!!!!)
>From the same book (Quarter Session Records of Charles I) I found a more =
sobering article that shows just how tough it could be for the common =
working lad.
>From the Wells Sessions of the Peace, 14th-17th January, 1634:
"Whereas this Courte is informed that John Popham was heretofore bound =
as an Apprentice unto John Mourton of the parish of Wedmore in this =
County, Weaver, for the terme of seaven years, and that the said Mourton =
hath received with him the sum of ffower pounds of Currant money to =
perfect him in the saide trade of a weaver, and to maynteyne and keepe =
him Duringe the said terme; And whereas it is now alleaged unto this =
Courte that the said Popham, by reason of his yll usage with the said =
Mourton, hath lost one of his feete, whereby the said Popham is not able =
to gett his Livinge, And that the said Mourton hath putt him away from =
his service, and hath left him chargeable to the said parish of =
Weddmore; It is therefore ordered by this Courte that the said John =
Mourton shall uppon Demaunde to him made give sufficient securitie to =
the Churchwardens and Overseers of the poore of the parish of Wedmore =
aforesaid for the paymente of the said fower pounds soe by him received =
with the said Popham to the said parish to be payed xxs. P. ann. Until =
the said ffower pounds be fully payed, or else the said Mourton is =
hereby ordered to receive his said Apprentice Popham againe, and to free =
the parish of any charge for him." =20
I notice that the only thing the court seems worried about is the cost =
of caring for this crippled young man, not the crime of his "master" =
crippling him in the first place!
Sue
