Hi Lyn

Yes - a game of cudgelling, could produce serious injuries - still forms
part of west of England country dancing in stylised manner without actual
bashing! See Hazel Hudson's article in recent issue of Wedmore News in which
she reports the 1819 constitution of the New Wedmore Friendly Society
(self-help mutual insurance) forbade members to indulge in single stick
fighting because of self-inflicted injuries it entailed. I can provide the
address of the Wedmore News.
