Dear Charles, a possible cousin.
You could also send me the Ancestry of Susanna Gibbs since she is a four
times great grand mother to me, my cousin Tim Curtin in Austalia and many
others we have. I am also related another way to her husband William Tyley!
I would very much also like her decsendants that you have and we can then
amalgamate them
Please come back to me at the email address below, I look forward to
hearing from you.
With best wishes

INTRODUCTION
=20
This book presents biographical and other information I
have gathered on the life of one Joseph Gibbs, born 1715-1725
at England, an excise officer in the service of the
King, and two generations of his descendents.
=20
My Gibbs family emigrated in 1846 from the village of
Wedmore, in Somersetshire, England to New York. When
I started tracing my roots in the 1960's, before the
Mormon Church produced and made available microfilm
and microfiche copies of genealogically important records,
I was fortunate to find in a used book store a three-volume
set of the Wedmore Parish Registers, compiled by the vicar
of the Church of England there in the 1890's. Through the
baptisms, marriages, and burials recorded I was able to
easily reconstruct my family from the birth and baptism of
William Gibbs, who was born in 1759.
=20
The Wedmore Parish Registers start in 1561 and are
complete (except for some pages torn out by an unhappy
parishioner in the 1600's) into the 19th century. In the
Marriage Registers, there were only three scattered Gibbs
entries between 1561 and 1773 when the first of four
Gibbses, three female and one male, were married in quick
succession over the next nine years.
=20
The logical conclusion is that the four Gibbses were
siblings and I so concluded until I discovered that the male
marriage, my family's progenitor (for the present), William
Gibbs, had been baptized in 1759 as an illegitimate child of
"William Gibbs, ye Officer of excise".
=20
The three female Gibbses remained a mystery until 1996
when, while casually reviewing the Church of Latter Day
Saints' International Genealogical Index, I found baptisms
of three daughters of a Joseph Gibbs in Devonshire with
the same names as the mystery Gibbses. To make a long
story short, I was looking at an unrelated family. The
following pages represent my findings.
=20
* * * * * * *
=20
In addition to the Notes & Sources section which document
the biographies, I include in an appendix much of my field
notes which document explorations into the records, both
successful and unsuccessful.=0C IDENTIFICATIONS
=20
An identifying code is prefixed to the given name of each
blood-related descendent of the progenitor of the line in
order of birth where possible. The first generation, the
progenitor, is prefixed with the code "1"; the second is
assigned a two-character identification; the third generation
a three-character identification, and so on. For males the
identification is a number; for females, a letter. Thus,
Joseph, Excise Officer is 1=3DJoseph; 11=3DJoseph is the first
son of the progenitor; 11B=3DCatherine(1786b) is the second
daughter of the first son. Spouses have the added "-S" (or
"-2S" for a second marriage) to their identifying code.=20
The identification "Z" denotes a child who died before
adulthood. For convenience in finding, the identification
is followed by "=3D". The characters "???" indicates the
name (either surname or given name) is unknown. The full
identification, progenitor to subject, is prefixed to every
person referred to in each biography once. Further
mentions of the person in that biography include the
identification only if necessary for clarity.
=20
Dates and places are set forth as follows: With dates, the
year, then the month, finally the day of the month, or
1782-05-05 is 5 May, 1782; with places, the state (or
country), then the county, and/or the city (or village or
township), that is, England, Somerset, Wedmore
(subsequent references to cities, etc., within the same
county are not prefixed with the county name). This
method of notation is advantageous in genealogy where
both dates and places may be only imprecisely fixed.
=20
In dates, a suffix "a","b","c", or "e" may appear. This
indicates uncertainty as to the exact time. "a" means
within plus or minus one unit of time (year, month, day).=20
"b" means during or before a date. "c" means within plus
or minus five units of time. "e" generally means within
plus or minus 15 units of time in the case of females or
plus or minus 25 years in the case of males.
=20
With dates, the suffix "a" will typically be used if a birth
year is derived from a census or grave marker, cases where
primary or reliable data is not available. A "b" suffix only
established that an event occurred by that date; if a baptism
occurred in 1800, the birth may have been a day or two
earlier, the previous year, or many years earlier. The "c"
suffix is an expansion of the "a" suffix. In the 19th
century and earlier, a generation - the years between the
birth date of a person and the birth date of his first child -
is generally 20 to 30 years. A suffix "c" appended to a
birth year indicates that the date is estimated within plus or
minus five years. In some cases where I have had to
estimate the birth date of a predecessor generation I have
resorted to use of a double suffix; that is, if a suffix is
1910c, meaning between 1905 and 1915, a previous
generation might be suffixed 1880cc, meaning between
1870 and 1890. The "e" suffix is a useful tool in working
backward in history; for example, a woman's child-bearing
years generally range from 15 to 45 years from her birth;
If the birth year of her child is known (say 1800); her birth
year can be set at 30 years, plus or minus 15, before that
year (thus 1770e).
=20
To further define each person's place in time, the birth
year is inserted between the given and family name.

This work has been assembled using the WordPerfect word
processing personal computer program, which includes
sorting and indexing capabilities. The program sorts from
0 to 9, then A to Z, which places all males (numbered
identifications) ahead of females (lettered identifications)
regardless of their chronological places.
=20
This work is available on computer disks in WordPerfect
and ASCII for persons wishing to search it in greater detail
than offered by the index and table of contents.

He married 1749-04-14 at England, Devon, High
Bickington, Mrs. Catherine Hackwill.
=20
1-S=3DCatherine(1717a) HACKWILL Gibbs died 1816 at
Wedmore at the age of 99.

No record of the birth or parentage of Joseph Gibbs has
been found.
=20
Searches of the IGI for a baptism and/or marriage of a
Catherine/Cattern ??? and ??? Hackwill produced nothing.=20
Searches of the IGI for a baptism of Joseph Gibbs in 1700-1740 era in =
Devon produced nothing.
=20
Joseph Gibbs and Catherine Hackwill were married at
Devon, High Bickington. The entry in the parish register
bestows the title "Mr." and "Mrs." on them. The first
three Gibbs children were baptized at High Bickington; the
last two at Devon, Chagford. The title "Mr." (and
"Mrs.") was used in every Gibbs entry (and only the Gibbs
entries during that period) in the High Bickington parish
registers. It was not used in the Gibbs entries in the
Chagford parish registeries. The title was used in
recording the burial of Joseph Gibbs in 1788 at Wedmore.=20
The title "Mr." (and "Mrs.") is found in entries in the
Wedmore Parish Registers during the term of service of
one Vicar and applied infrequently then.
=20
To check the possibility that he was moved about the
country as an excise officer (as was his possible brother,
our ancestor William(1730c) Gibbs), a check of Public
Records Office files for a Joseph Gibbs, Excise Officer
during the years 1743-1752 was made, and, yes, he was an
Excise Officer.
=20
His record as an exciseman is incomplete; the first found
record of his service locates him at Devon, Torrington in
1751 where he is titled "Officer". The next record places
him at Devon, Chumley in 1762 and refers to his
drunkeness while in service at Devon, Chagford. For that,
he was discharged from the service. He was restored, on
his appeal, in April, 1763 and assigned to the Cuckfield,
Suffolk office. One month later in May, 1763 he was
named Officer of the Axbridge, Somerset office, only to be
discharged again for drunkenness in August, 1764.
=20
High Bickington is located some six or seven miles from
Torrington. Axbridge is a village some five miles from
Wedmore. His places of residence were at or near his
places of service. Apparently he chose to remain in
Wedmore after leaving the service.
=20
Joseph Gibbs was buried 1778-04-23 at Wedmore.=20
Catherine Hackwill Gibbs was buried 1816-02-15 at
Wedmore. No will for a Joseph Gibbs was probated
between 1778-1882. No will for a Catherine Gibbs was
probated during the period 1816-1820. No record has been
found of his presence in Wedmore during the 24 years
between his termination as an exciseman and his death.=20
Catherine Gibbs was assessed land taxes as occupant of a
property in Wedmore called Lawrences during the period
1787-1812. Perhaps she resided with one of her children
between 1812 and 1816 when she died.
=20
1Z=3DMary(1755b) GIBBS was baptized 1755-09-08 at
Chagford. She was buried 1755-12-27 at Chagford.

=20

Joseph Gibbs and Mary Stock were married by License.=20
The license, dated 1779-01-26, identified the parties as
Joseph Gibbs of Compton Bishop & Mary Stock of
Axbridge, a minor with consent (of parents?). The bond
was given by Joseph Gibbs & Henry Stock. Both signed
the marriage register with witnesses Thomas Bennett, Edith
Nash, Wm Nash, Ann Durban, John Durbane.=20
=20
In the Axbridge Baptisms, 1718-1790, baptisms are missing
from 1780-04-05 to 1780-12-31. The following Gibbs
baptisms were found;
=20
1781-08-26, Elizabeth, d. Joseph & Mary Gibbs
1786-01-08, Catherine, d. Do.
1787-10-26, Mary, d, do
1790-05-19, Joseph, s, do
=20
In the Axbridge Baptisms, 1791-1812, the following Gibbs
baptisms were found;
=20
1792-12-27, John, s. Joseph Gibbs, chandler & Mary his
wife.
1795-06-01, Ann, d. Joseph & Mary Gibbs.
=20
(As Axebridgte is inland it is most probable that chandler'
is one who makes and sells candles.)
=20
In the Compton Bishop Baptisms, 1641-1807, the period
1779-1790 was searched. No Charles Gibbs, as mentioned
in the Joseph(1757b) Gibbs will, was found. He may have
been baptized during the missing pages period 1780-04-05
to 1780-12-31, or at another church during the period 1781
to 1786.
=20
Tracing Joseph Gibbs was not an easy task. We do know
this --
=20
He was born 1757b at Devon, Chagford, according to
Parish Registers.
=20
He arrived 1764 at Somerset, Wedmore, at the age of
about five, with his parents and siblings, as recorded in the
Minute Books of the Board of Excise.
=20
He resided at Compton Bishop at the time of his marriage
according to his marriage allegations..
=20
He resided at Axbridge during the period 1780-1796 where
his children were baptized. He was assessed taxes in 1779
through 1792 as occupant on a home and for a "trade." In
1792 in the recording of the baptism of his son John he
was identified as a chandler. In 1796 he was assessed at
owner and occupier of the Lamb Inn.
=20
He resided at Northover, near Wells, and was employed as
a toll collector for a time prior to 1823.
=20
Nothing has been found for the 26-year period 1796-1823.=20
Records of Wells (Northover), Glastonbury (another
Northover) and Wedmore were searched. No record of a
Joseph Gibbs was found in extant jury lists, land taxes, poll
books, churchwardens' rates, warrants to apprehend, or
pew registers.
=20
Ilchester Gaol records show that Joseph Gibbs was charged
by His Majesty 1823-07-04 for "offences committed against
the excise laws. Bail - to satisfy =9C500" (a huge amount in
those days). From 1823-07-04 to 1824-03-03 he was a
"prisoner for debt in the Gaol of Ilchester."
=20
On 1824-02-12 he executed a will while a prisoner at
Ilchester. He died 1824-11-06.
=20
He was buried 1824-11-12 at Wedmore, "of St. Cuthbert's
Wells, 67 years." His will, probated 1827-12-10, named
William Tyley of Panborough in the Parish of Wedmore,
Somerset, Yeoman, executor. He was buried in the
churchyard where his parents rested.

=20
James(1780c) May and Elizabeth(1781b) Gibbs May
resided at Yeovil. He died 1834b. His will describes him
as "supervisor of Excise" and he "leaves all to my dear
wife Elizabeth May" His will was made 1833-02-18, and
proved 1834-04-28.
=20
The will of Elizabeth(1781b) Gibbs May, made 1833-12-02
and proved 1834-04-28 (on the same day as that of her
husband) describes her as "widow" and lists her children.
=20
Included in the same bundle with the May wills was a
mortgage for premises at Kingsdon for =9C100. Mr. James
May, Yeovil, Supervisor of Excise lent the money to Mr.
George Bishop & his Trustee. 1831-12-16. This was a
large amount of money in the 1830's so James May at least
was wealthy.
=20
Yeovil baptisms, 1800-1833 were searched. No children of
James May were recorded. =20
Yeovil Land Tax records for the year 1832 for the
Borough, Hendpil, Lyde, Longcroft, Fenn Mill, Yeovil
Marsh, Wiedon & Huntley were searched. No record of

born about 1783 and because there were no other Bagg

The title MR in the records is a title of respect at this time,
given to a person of higher standing than the ordinary

some social standing, to stood for mistress and was given

by Sam'l Hobbs. Searched Marriage License Index
D/D/CM 1779B. 26.1.1779 Joseph Gibbs of Compton
Bishop & Mary Stock of Axbridge, a minor with consent
(of parents?). The bond was given by Joseph Gibbs &
Henry Stock. I think this could well be the missing
Joseph. The wife's name is correct, she would have been
born after 1758 (you give her age and birth as about 1760)
while Joseph's would not have been a minor, i.e. born
1758 or before. If we can find a signature of Joseph Gibbs
(1757) and compare it with the one on the marriage license
it might help to prove that the J.G. buried 1778 was or
wasn't the J.G.(c1720). Fathers often stood surety.

Copy of a letter: The Vicarage, Wells, Somerset, England,
February 29th, 1968.
Dear Mr. Gibbs,
The only mariage of a Joseph Gibbs I can find in
our registers is on 16 February 1739/40, when Joseph
Gibbs of Cameley married Elizabeth Green of Wells, by
license. The original license adds that the groom was a
bachelor and that the bride was a spinster of Burcot in St.
Cuthbert's. No children of this marriage appear to have
been baptized at Wells a search was made up to 1763. But
the Cameley Bishop's Transcripts of 1749 show the
baptism of Mary dau. of Jo. and Elizabeth Gibbs on 5(?)
Oct. The transcripts for this period are very poor hence
the doubt.
There are other registers entries which may relate
to your family.
James Gibbs married Grace Warinton 17th
November 1754.
James Gibbs bachelor married Sarah Yeard
spinster with consent of parents 30th
November 1760.
There is also a will of Joseph Gibbs of the out
parish of St. Cuthbert Wells dated 12th Feb. 1824
(describing himself as late of Northover, toll collector, then
a prisoner for debt in the gaol of Ilchester) and proved 10th
December 1827. He mentions his wife Mary, his sons
Charles and Joseph, his daughters Elizabeth, Mary and Ann
Gibbs, his grandson Charles Foster, and his friend William
Tyley of Panborough in Wedmore, yeoman, as executor in
trust. The testator died 6th November 1824. The records
of Ilchester Gaol show that he was committed under
warrant of 2nd July 1823 for offences commited against the
Excise Laws. and discharged on 3 March 1824.
I trust this information wil be helpful, and the fees
for the search amount to L 3:5/-.
Yours faithfully, /s/, R. M. McIntyre, Vicar

(excerpts of a letter 1968-4-2 from Rev. R.M. McIntyre,
Vicar, St. Cuthbert's, Wells. (Notes, p.139) Cameley is in
the parish of Temple Cloud and in the Deanery of Chew
Magna. The postal Address is Cameley Near Bristol.
Northover is in Ilchester Parish and the postal address is
Northover, Nr. Ilchester, Yeovil.
The Gibbs/Green allegations are not preserved.
The Gibbs/Wall is, but simply describes him as a yeoman
and her as a spinster and both of 21 years and upwards.
All abstracts of wills, etc., were destroyed by bombing
during the last war.=20

Excerpts from a letter report from Mary Hobhouse.
Somerset(?) Marriage License Index D/D/CM 1779B.
26.1.1779 Joseph Gibbs of Compton Bishop & Mary Stock
of Axbridge, a minor with consent (of parents?). The bond
was given by Joseph Gibbs & Henry Stock. I think this
could well be the missing Joseph. The wife's name is
correct, she would have been born after 1758 while
Joseph's would not have been a minor, i.e. born 1758 or
before. If we can find a signature of Joseph Gibbs (1757)
and compare it with the one on the marriage license it
might help to prove that the J.G. buried 1778 was or
wasn't the J.G.(c1720). Fathers often stood surety. <9-NTE
