Dr. Edward G. Dyer arrived in Burlington in 1839. He was the first doctor,
and also famous as an abolitionist. His house was part of the underground
railroad to Canada.
Burlington was strongly German to begin with. Maybe Dyer simply took over
the "I serve" motto - which he would know if he was English, anyway -
because he helped people, many of whom were German speaking. Maybe people
just applied the motto to him, because he obviously was an unusual man.
