Sandi
I have had another look at the records for the Millards in Wedmore and have
found the following, which confirms my thoughts that earlier of the two
baptismal records was the one of interest to you.
WPR burials 26th May 1815 Gabriel Millard aged 3 years.
I don't know how much communication you have had with the Burlington
Historical Society in Wisconsin. A year or so ago they sent me an
interesting package of material on the Duckett immigrants to the USA from
Wedmore. There appear to have been three occasions 1846, 1847 and 1853. The
names that I have come across other than Duckett include Gadd, Heath, &
Toomer. I have the impression that a high percentage came from the north
west corner of Wedmore parish (the hamlets of Cocklake, Crickham & Clewer, &
the neighbouring parish of Weare), this would also be true of the Ropers.
The material from Burlington includes a paper by Herbert Duckett, their
first president. It relates to The Dyersville settlement. The paper is
almost entirely based on a book by Rev. Arthur Halbach, called "Dyersville,
Its History and Its People". I suspect you have already seen this book. Let
me know if you wish to follow up.
My immediate interest is to try to find living relatives in the USA of a
Noah Duckett. He is not a close relative, but his linage is a bit cloudy. He
arrived in the USA in 1853, and put his farm, in the Burlington area,up for
sale in 1869. Heading for California, in 1874 he was swindled of 700 dollars
in a card game in Nevada. I know from some old papers that he died on 8 12
1925, his wife Amelia (Heath) died on 7 5 1926. This old family tree
includes relatives alive in the early 1960s. Two are Donald Victor Kleffman
born 27 1 1926 & Roy Leland Goodlayson born 27 5 1939. I could do with some
help, from anyone, in trying to take this a stage further. Regards Matthew.
