Hi Stan

Now that IS interesting - the babies being boarded out. My =
Ggreatgrandmother (Annie Burr Tincknell) had an illegitimate daughter in =
1887. In 1891 Annie is married (1890) but her daughter Minnie Burr is =
living with the Creeden family. They raised her but my family always =
knew of this half sister. You have now enlightened me about how this =
situation could have been arranged.

Many thanks=20

Lyn

I don't know if the children were billeted out or something.=20

Hi Lyn, your supposition is correct,=20
In 1887 Thomas John Barnardo began a scheme of 'boarding out', sending =
330 boys to country homes to be fostered.=20
In 1889 Thomas began another scheme, boarding out the babies of =
unmarried mothers. While the mothers lived and worked in one family, =
their babies were looked after by a fostering family nearby.=20
