Hi Katherine you must have been reading my mind. I have the old maps had =
found Kelson's farm.and was trying to work out where Bay tree farm must =
be.and now I know.Do you know where [Calcot] Catcot farm was, is =
situated.I notice in the old map ref there a village called Calcot but =
did not track it down.John Pople Porter is turning out to being quite a =
mystery. If he was a Inn Keeper in Highbridge North in 1904 when did he =
sell the farm for that is 8 years before he left for NZ.? Looking at =
those Wedmore Lists the whole town must be related to each other.I =
notice Comes patch in the Old maps they are a large family and Doritheam =
Comer married Johannis Porter in1578 there seems to be two Porter lines =
so which is which ? Our Stanley is obviously a local historian and must =
have dug those figures he quoted from somewhere. If J.P.P. was a =
Innkeeper did he own the Pub, lease it, or was he the manager?
Will send you copies of birth certificates etc shortly.
Love Cuz

Dear Stanley,
I have been giving some thought to the correspondence we have had on =
why my grandfather left Wedmore and we have both learned of some rather =
colourful reasons about which we can't be sure. I can't prove the fling =
with the servant and as far as I know grandpa never gambled... his =
brother in law George Curtis did..(and they both left together for NZ) =
He may well have owed money on property deals or the like which would =
have some validity.
After reading more about the period in which they lived in Wedmore and =
taking into consideration the call from the Colonial Office to " Come to =
NZ", combined with the dreadful weather patterns of the time and poor =
milk prices, I am not surprised he decided to uproot and leave. My =
mother always said it was the weather and the opportunity to own more =
land and that starting in a new country appealed to him... never mind =
whether his wife was keen... ah well! thats how it was then, was it not?
Can you ask Ann if she has received my epistle per snail mail? I =
haven't wanted to bother you with "our"stuff.I am sorry I did not meet =
her when in Wedmore recently.
Thank you for the material on BayTree Farm. Much appreciated.
I agree with Ann that the JOhn Porter she referred to is the same who =
died in Plud St.
His grave stone refers to Kelsons Farm.
Kind regards,
Katherine

Dear Katherine,
=20
Bay Tree Farm is in what I call Old Cocklake; the part of Cocklake =
to the east of the Cheddar Road. From the Cheddar road you go down the =
Dungeon, at the bottom of the hill, on the right, is Dungeon farm where =
your Pople relatives lived for many years. On the left is the plot where =
Michael Tutton's ancestors lived. Just past New Road on the left is =
Moorend Farm that was built by old Hannah Pople, for one of her sons, on =
part of the Bay Tree farm orchard. So the next house on the left is Bay =
tree Farm.
=20
Ann thinks that the John Porter who was at Catcot in 1845 was =
probably the same person that died in 1895 in Plud street (that's where =
Kelson's farm is) at the age of 81 (I think) (Wedmore P R).
