Hi Tim,
I have included some remarks to your post below which might help =
in understanding my thinking on the Ducketts.
The Ducketts are indeed problematic folk, and it will need some extra =
evidence to sort them out fully.
=20
Lynn has William husband of Mary Bussell bap. 9 Jan.1703/4 - but that =
William was the infant son of Michael Duckett and was buried on 23 Jan =
1703/4; and has Mary Bussell Duckett dying Sept 1802 aged about 89 - =
that death could refer to another Mary Duckett a lot younger, I suggest =
Mary Millard Duckett.
=20
I would agree that Mary Duckett buried Sep 1802 is probably Mary =
Millard baptised 3 Apr 1744.
Stephen suggests that Betty Duckett buried April 1765 died a couple of =
months or so after burial of son Adam - but he was in fact buried after =
Betty, on 27 Nov 1765 (which is not proof either way for or against =
Stephen's plausible theory as Adam could indeed have been born say in =
March/April 1765, but for Adam being buried as "son of Joseph & =
Elizabeth Duckett", possibly implying that this Betty was still alive)
=20
That was a typo . . I should of written ' before '. However the point =
I was trying to make was that Betty might well of died in childbirth and =
her son Adam without the proper care of a mother died soon after. It was =
a theory to find an explanation for who this Betty might be. I see no =
problem with the burial of Adam designated as ' the son of Joseph and =
Elizabeth ' . . . . as indeed he was.
Stephen has John Duckett bap 19 July 1763 marrying Elizabeth Buxton =
and dying in 1843 aged 79 - but he was the son of John Duckett and Mary =
Millard who had another son John bapt 4 Feb 1794; although no burial for =
John sen exists (maybe he was killed or died overseas in the wars) it =
seems he must have been dead by 1794. But this "creates" another John =
Duckett also born in 1763 or 1764 but not in Wedmore and dying aged 79 =
in 1843.
The above statement is incorrect and I remember struggling with =
this same problem when I originally researched the Ducketts. There are =
two John and Mary Duckett families to consider.=20
Firstly John Duckett and Mary Millard married at Wedmore in =
1763. I will not enumerate all of their ten children but their last =
child was Michael baptized 16 Feb 1785. Mary at this time is about forty =
years old. This couple I have buried at Wedmore within a month of each =
other in Aug and Sep 1802.
Secondly the John Duckett son of Joseph and Betty that married =
Mary Duckett in 1786. Their children are Ann , Benjamin , William and =
the John you mentioned above baptized 4 Feb 1794 who I have as the =
future husband of Ann Whiting.
There is a case also for attaching John Duckett bap 1762 at Clewer to =
Elizabeth Buxton, instead of Mary Duckett as per Stephen, because this =
John was born at Clewer, close by Crickham, where Elizabeth died - true =
this John died in Wedmore but by then he was 84 and possibly living with =
one of his children. But the evidence for Stephen's John bap 1763 as =
Elizbeth's husband and dying in Crickham is also compelling.
=20
Your statement above implies that you have some information =
that John Duckett baptized on 31 Mar 1762 was born at Clewer. Please let =
me know what this is. If indeed he was born at Clewer I would indeed =
have to rethink things.
Regarding which John Duckett married Elizabeth Buxton etc. I =
agree that a case could be made for either one and my argument for =
choosing John baptized 19 Jul 1763 is primarily geographical. Lets start =
with Edward Duckett baptized 25 Dec 1712 the son of Edward Duckett and =
Elizabeth Taylor. His father died at Stoughton in 1760. Edward the son =
married a Mary about 1734 and they had four children Elizabeth , John , =
Michael and lastly Mary in 1743. Edwards wife Mary died in May 1758 at =
Clewer.
Now we come to Mary Wall who married Robert Nuttycombe in 1759. =
Within less than a year her husband is dead and not letting the grass =
grow under her feet four months later she married the widower Edward =
Duckett. Edward and Mary have only one child Hester baptized 9 Dec 1760 =
and this is significant! I will return to Robert Nuttycombe and Mary =
Wall shortly. Edwards son Michael died in 1766 to be followed a year =
later by his father. Both lived at Clewer.
The remaining son of Edward and Mary , namely John baptized 2 =
Mar 1737 married Mary Millard in 1763 and their eldest son another John =
baptized 19 Jul 1763 married Elizabeth Buxton. They had nine children =
that I am aware of. This John Duckett died at Crickham in 1843 and his =
wife Elizabeth predesceased him some thirty four years earlier in 1809 =
also at Crickham. This scenario puts this branch of the Ducketts over =
four generations in the Stoughton , Clewer , Crickham locale.
The reason to take a look at the Mary Wall mentioned earlier is =
because of the entry for the burial of Mary Duckett in 1810 who died at =
Theale. All of the Mary Duckett burials from the middle of the =
eighteenth century I have accounted for except the one in 1795. This =
Mary Duckett wife of George I know nothing about. I believe the entry in =
1810 is Mary Wall but who is this Mary Wall?
The only Robert Nuttycombe I see baptized at Wedmore was in =
1717. This would make him a contemporary of Mary baptized in 1716 the =
daughter of John Wall and Mary Clapp of Clewer. This John Wall family =
later moved to Sand and Robert Nuttycombe died at Heathouse. If Mary was =
raised at Clewer she would of been well aquainted with Edward Duckett. =
Later when the family moved to Sand she met Robert at close by =
Heathouse. Of course both Robert and Mary would of been well into their =
forties at the time of their marriage but this would explain why Mary =
and Edward Duckett only had one child Hester. Mary would of been 45 =
years old. If this is the Mary that died in 1810 she would of been about =
95! Not an impossible age but surely one that might generate a mention =
in the registers.
After the death of her daughter Hester in 1783 she would of had =
no immediate family to turn to. Of the two daughters of her second =
husband Edward Duckett whom she would of course of helped raise the =
first Elizabeth had married Barnabas Cuff of Cheddar in 1759. The other =
daughter Mary married Stephen Champeney and my guess is that she moved =
to their home at Theale. Mary and Stephen Champeney both died within a =
year of each other in 1807 and 1808 at Theale and at this point Mary and =
Stephen Champeneys eldest daughter Mary wife of William Adams also =
living at Theale might of given old Mary Wall a home to finish out her =
days. All hypothesis of couse but it is the only way I can account for =
the burial record of Mary Duckett in 1810.
=20
About the only thing that is still open to debate I believe , is =
which John Duckett married Elizabeth Buxton but until I see some new =
evidence I will stick with John of 1763.
I agree with Stephen re William husband of Ann Brown - perhaps the =
William who married Sarah Fear at Moorlinch was William bap 1766 (he's =
in need of a wife!) and living in Blackford in the 1820s.
Meanwhile I am most grateful to both Lynn and Stephen for eliminating =
many of my own wrong assumptions!
Thanks also due to Myles and Olga Fraser for the 1832 Electoral Roll =
for the Hundred of Bempstone (inc. Wedmore) that lists the following =
Ducketts as voters (eligible to vote because they had freehold =
property):
I will take a stab at the voter roll before ending but if anyone =
has any further input on the Ducketts or any of the folks mentioned =
above it would be a fine thing if we could come to a consensus.

Mary's
Wedmore Somerset England.
There is an entry in Apr 1765 for the burial of a Betty =
Duckett a couple or so months after the burial of Joseph and Bettys =
third son Adam who died in infancy. There is in my mind a possibility =
that this could be the wife of Joseph and that he remarried soon after =
another Elizabeth. There is no record of this possible marriage at =
Wedmore but they could of married elsewhere. If this is not the case . . =
. who is Betty Duckett buried in 1765?
Children:
i John Duckett, b. 1762, =
Somerset
England, 31 Mar 1762, St Mary's Wedmore Somerset England, d. May =
1846,
Wedmore Somerset England, buried: 29 May 1846, St Mary's Wedmore =
Somerset

He married Elizabeth Buxton, 14 =
April
1789, in St Mary's Wedmore Somerset England.
I have John Duckett baptized 19 Jul 1763 son of John Duckett =
and Mary Millard as the wife of Elizabeth Buxton. This John Duckett died =
May 1843 at Crickam aged 79 years. His wife Elizabeth died in Oct 1809 =
at Crickham.
The John Duckett baptised 31 Mar 1762 married Mary Duckett =
baptised 28 May 1766 the daughter of John Duckett and Mary Millard on 15 =
May 1786 at Wedmore. He died May 1846 as you say aged 84 years and his =
wife Mary in Aug 1831 aged 65 years. Both died at Wedmore.
ii William Duckett, b. 1763, =

Wedmore
Somerset England, buried: 1 Apr 1772, St Mary's Wedmore Somerset =

England, 27 Jan 1773, St Mary's Wedmore Somerset England, d. Dec =

He married Sarah Fear, 1 April =
1801,
in Moorlinch Somerset England.
This William Duckett married Ann Brown baptized at Wedmore =
on 22 Jan 1774 and the daughter of John Brown and Ann Shartman. They =
married on 25 Jan 1794 at Wells St.Cuthberts. Ann Brown Duckett died =
aged 57 years at Milton , Wookey and was returned to Wedmore for burial =
on 8 Dec 1830. They apparently lived at Milton, Wookey or Wells =
St.Cuthberts although their first two children Elizabeth and Mary were =
baptised at Wedmore. This William Duckett can be found at Burnham in the =
1851 Census age 78 at the home of his son William. I do not see any =
other William Duckett born circa 1773 at Wedmore other than he. William =
died about nine months after the Census and was returned to Wedmore for =
burial on 17 Dec 1851. William and Anns children give their places of =
birth variously as Wells , Sutton , Milton or Wookey. Please see an =
earlier post regarding this matter and Edwin Duckett who I believe is =
their son born about 1815 who married Sarah Binning and can be found in =
the 1851 Census for Weare.
I have no information on the William Duckett that married =
Sarah Fear . . are they still alive in 1851?

statement is incorrect and I remember struggling with this same =
problem when I=20
originally researched the Ducketts. There are two John and Mary =
Duckett=20
families to consider. </STRONG></FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=3DArial =
size=3D2><STRONG> =20
Firstly John Duckett and Mary Millard married at Wedmore in 1763. I =
will not=20
enumerate all of their ten children but their last child was Michael =
baptized=20
16 Feb 1785. Mary at this time is about forty years old. This couple I =
have=20
buried at Wedmore within a month of each other in Aug and Sep=20
1802.</STRONG></FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=3DArial =
size=3D2><STRONG> =20
Secondly the John Duckett son of Joseph and Betty that married Mary =
Duckett in=20
1786. Their children are Ann , Benjamin , William and the John you =
mentioned=20
above baptized 4 Feb 1794 who I have as the future husband of Ann=20
Whiting.</STRONG></FONT></DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=3DArial size=3D2>There is a case also for attaching =
John Duckett=20
bap 1762 at Clewer to Elizabeth Buxton, instead of Mary Duckett as per =
Stephen, because this John was born at Clewer, close by Crickham, =
where=20
Elizabeth died - true this John died in Wedmore but by then he was 84 =
and=20
possibly living with one of his children. But the evidence for =
Stephen's John=20
bap 1763 as Elizbeth's husband and dying in Crickham is also=20
compelling.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=3DArial size=3D2> =
</FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=3DArial size=3D2> =
<STRONG>Your=20
statement above implies that you have some information that John =
Duckett=20
baptized on 31 Mar 1762 was born at Clewer. Please let me=20
know</STRONG></FONT><FONT face=3DArial size=3D2><STRONG> what this is. =
If indeed=20
he was born at Clewer I would indeed have to rethink=20
things.</STRONG></FONT></DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=3DArial =
size=3D2><STRONG> Regarding=20
which John Duckett married Elizabeth Buxton etc. I agree that a case =
could be=20
made for either one and my argument for choosing John baptized 19 Jul =
1763 is=20
primarily geographical. Lets start with Edward Duckett baptized =
25 Dec=20
1712 the son of Edward Duckett and Elizabeth Taylor. His father died =
at=20
Stoughton in 1760. Edward the son married a Mary about 1734 and they =
had four=20
children Elizabeth , John , Michael and lastly Mary in 1743. Edwards =
wife Mary=20
died in May 1758 at Clewer.</STRONG></FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=3DArial =
size=3D2><STRONG> Now=20
we come to Mary Wall who married Robert Nuttycombe in 1759. =
Within less=20
than a year her husband is dead and not letting the grass grow under =
her feet=20
four months later she married the widower Edward Duckett. Edward and =
Mary have=20
only one child Hester baptized 9 Dec 1760 and this is significant! I =
will=20
return to Robert Nuttycombe and Mary Wall shortly. Edwards son Michael =
died in=20
1766 to be followed a year later by his father. Both lived at=20
Clewer.</STRONG></FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=3DArial =
size=3D2><STRONG> The=20
remaining son of Edward and Mary , namely John baptized 2 Mar 1737 =
married=20
Mary Millard in 1763 and their eldest son another John baptized 19 Jul =
1763=20
married Elizabeth Buxton. They had nine children that I am aware =
of.=20
This John Duckett</STRONG></FONT><FONT face=3DArial =
size=3D2><STRONG> died=20
at Crickham in 1843 and his wife Elizabeth predesceased him some =
thirty four=20
years earlier in 1809 also at Crickham. This scenario puts this branch =
of the=20
Ducketts over four </STRONG></FONT><FONT face=3DArial =
size=3D2><STRONG>generations=20
in the Stoughton , Clewer , Crickham locale.</STRONG></FONT></DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=3DArial size=3D2><STRONG> The =
reason to=20
take a look at the Mary Wall mentioned earlier is because of the entry =
for the=20
burial of Mary Duckett in 1810 who died at Theale. All of the Mary =
Duckett=20
burials from the middle of the eighteenth century I have accounted for =
except=20
the one in 1795. This Mary Duckett wife of George I know nothing =
about. I=20
believe the entry in 1810 is Mary Wall but who is this Mary=20
Wall?</STRONG></FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=3DArial =
size=3D2><STRONG> The only=20
Robert Nuttycombe I see baptized at Wedmore was in 1717. This would =
make him a=20
contemporary of Mary baptized in 1716 the daughter of John Wall and =
Mary Clapp=20
of Clewer. This John Wall family later moved to Sand and Robert =
Nuttycombe=20
died at Heathouse. If Mary was raised at Clewer she would of been well =
aquainted with Edward Duckett. Later when the family moved to Sand she =
met=20
Robert at close by Heathouse. Of course both Robert and Mary would of =
been=20
well into their forties at the time of their marriage but this would =
explain=20
why Mary and Edward Duckett only had one child Hester. Mary would of =
been 45=20
years old. If this is the Mary that died in 1810 she would of been =
about 95!=20
Not an impossible age but surely one that might generate a mention in =
the=20
registers.</STRONG></FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=3DArial =
size=3D2><STRONG> After the=20
death of her daughter Hester in 1783 she would of had no immediate =
family to=20
turn to. Of the two daughters of her second husband Edward Duckett =
whom she=20
would of course of helped raise the first Elizabeth had married =
Barnabas Cuff=20
of Cheddar in 1759. The other daughter Mary married Stephen Champeney =
and my=20
guess is that she moved to their home at Theale. Mary and Stephen =
Champeney=20
both died within a year of each other in 1807 and 1808 at Theale and =
at this=20
point Mary and Stephen Champeneys eldest daughter Mary wife of William =
Adams=20
also living at Theale might of given old Mary Wall a home to finish =
out her=20
days. All hypothesis of couse but it is the only way I can account for =
the=20
burial record of Mary Duckett in 1810.</STRONG></FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=3DArial =
size=3D2><STRONG> =20
</STRONG></FONT></DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=3DArial =
size=3D2><STRONG> About=20
the only thing that is still open to debate I believe , is which John =
Duckett=20
married Elizabeth Buxton but until I see some new evidence I will =
stick with=20
John of 1763.</STRONG></FONT></DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=3DArial size=3D2>I agree with Stephen re William =
husband of Ann=20
Brown - perhaps the William who married Sarah Fear at Moorlinch was =
William=20
bap 1766 (he's in need of a wife!) and living in Blackford in the=20
1820s.</FONT></DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=3DArial size=3D2>Meanwhile I am most grateful to both =
Lynn and=20
Stephen for eliminating many of my own wrong assumptions!</FONT></DIV>
<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=3DArial size=3D2>Thanks also due to Myles and Olga =
Fraser for the=20

lists the=20
following Ducketts as voters (eligible to vote because they had =

<DIV> </DIV>
<DIV><FONT face=3DArial size=3D2> =
