Hi Mike and welcome to the Wedmore List!

Talk about serendipity, because I have just spent the afternoon at the
Tutton Wedmore site re-checking names and dates and contemplating what was
the best way to get those missing Wedmore baptisms? Lo and behold I d/l my
messages and here is your note telling of your new transcriptions.......Mind
you I have not yet gone back online to check for names etc. but I am sure
there will be plenty there of interest to me, but probably more importantly
in your view is the fact that my connection to Wedmore is
also.......AMESBURY!

Now I have been researching for more than 20 years but gone little distance
with this difficult to find and connect family despite much looking and
working on it over that time. I may have even chatted with you at some
point but not sure as I had a huge computer crash early in the year and lost
all of my records that were not printed out. This also included my large
database of 20,000 family records, which had been dutifully backed up to
floppies, but sadly when I needed them.......they would not read to allow me
to put back into the system.

Ironically this all happened as a friend was helping me to install a CD
burner so that exactly this would not happen. We got the Burner in okay but
the software just froze the whole system and corrupted all of my files, but
I did not panic knowing that I had been diligent and had the floppies.
Needless to say since then I have been very busy trying to get everything
back into my new database from a card system that I commenced when I first
began researching, and fortunately had kept it more or less up to date and
cross referenced to the PAF database.

Now have changed to Legacy (more for variety to ease the boredom of
re-typing everything than anything else) and have just put 8000 back in and
growing. For this reason I have not been doing a huge amount of new
research recently, but today was checking a few entries as I was typing and
wandered to the Wedmore site and had another look at this A......lot!

Over the years I have built up a ONS of Amesbury which I encountered
anywhere in my research, and seem to have found everyone else's family and
not very much on my own. Over time have swapped some details with different
people but never really found anyone working on my particular branch it
seems, and by your names I doubt that you are directly doing that either.

My 2 x gt grandmother was Sarah Amesbury b. 1835 Bristol d/o George Amesbury
and Charlotte ?
Found George and a new wife Elizabeth living in Bristol in 1851 census with
the children, but not found Charlotte's surname or their marriage.....or the
second marriage for that matter either?

George Amesbury was bapt 20 Nov 1805 Wedmore s/o Robert Amesbury who married
Elizabeth Barret in Wedmore 1799. Elizabeth died 1810 and Robert then
married Praxey Toogood of Wedmore.

Robert was born about 1774 from records of his burial 1850 aged 76 years in
Wedmore, but I have never been able to find a Robert in SOM or even GLS as a
possible connection......despite having quite a number of R's. If only he
could have survived another year for me to find him in 51 census would have
been a godsend, because I do not know whether he was of the Wedmore family
or his parents came there from another town.

I have been on the Wedmore List for a couple of years and there appears to
be very few with interest in the Amesbury name, except perhaps as a side
line from a connecting marriage, so really gained little except for working
further on Toogood's and other connecting families. Do you know anything of
this family of mine, or can you add anything to suggest what direction to
take to find them in or around Wedmore. I thought perhaps they may connect
to the Burnham, Huntspill or even Mangotsfield groups but so far nothing to
confirm where Robert fits into a family.

Anyway, Mike that's my family in a nutshell and I look forward to hearing
your comments, but in the meantime I shall continue to sort out what I have
here, check your very welcome website later and many thanks for the hard
work, and hopefully we can help each other to work out this elusive family.

Warm wishes, Noelene
