Hi Tim.
Interesting questions; George Duckett 1778- 1858, auctioneer, farmer &
husband of Charlotte, left diaries from 1840 to 1852 with some gaps. Joseph
Wollen snr. ( a solicitor) was his brother in law and a good friend. The
death of Sarah Duckett (nee Fear) of Mark in 1846, is mentioned in the
diaries. She was George's sister in law, & wife of William of Mark (George
handled the clearance sale, that followed when William retired to Burnham).
William & Sarah had a daughter Elizabeth baptised in Bawdrip in 1804. I
think she married Joseph Wollen jnr. of Painswick in 1836. The marriage
record gives no clue to Elizabeth's identity, it was a marriage by special
licence & I have not found that. However, George does record that Betty
Wollen was in his house between the time of Sarah's death and her burial.
Elizabeth Wollen senior died in 1828. The two Joseph Wollens were uncle and
nephew. It would make sense that the two Elizabeth Wollens (both nee
Duckett) were aunt and niece. Joseph Wollen jnr. came from Painswick in
Gloucestershire about 50 miles from Wedmore, he would not have met his wife
by chance. Both George Duckett and Joseph Wollen snr. were comparatively
wealthy men, living in some of the largest houses in Wedmore.
Although Joseph who married Grace Tilley was George's first cousin, their
fates could hardly be greater, as Grace describes herself as a pauper in the
1851 census. With respect to the question of Joseph being married twice;
Joseph and Grace were married on 25 5 1808, Elizabeth was baptised on 14 6
1809, she is 43 in the 1851 census. I know of at least two other mistakes in
Christian names made by clergymen for Ducketts alone. 13 10 1814 Mary
daughter of George and Chastity (Charlotte) & 6 2 1817 William son of Edward
and Hannah (Honour). I wonder if it was the same clergyman, and if he made
mistakes with other families? Matthew.
