Hi again,
Thank you to Mary for so quickly replying with information about the
religious aspect of the Iowa migration. It was a bit of a long shot that it
was the British Israelites that helped send Isaac to NZ, but I thought I'd
try anyway. I know that my Ward family certainly migrated to New Zealand in
search of a better life than the hardships they faced in Wedmore at the
time. The few letters that survive from Sarah to her sons paint a very
gloomy picture of life for them in Wedmore in the 1840s.
And in reply to John, according to the 1851 census, my Sarah Welch was
probably born in Evercreech, also in Somerset, so I appreciate you taking
the time to look for the name for me, but it seems that I'll have to try and
find the Evercreech records to track her down. Ancestry.com looks like it
has what I'm after, but I'm hoping to find a cheaper source of the
information (the old kiwi dollar doesn't stretch too far in US dollars).
