To find out who lived in which house may not be easy. One needs to be able
to go to the Somerset Records Office to do some of the searches.

The first source to look at is the Wedmore Tythe map of 1837 and its
associated paperwork. From these you can find out the names of the owners
and occupiers (in about 1837) of the land. Each parcel of land is given a
number on the map and the locations of the houses are drawn on the map so
you can associate a parcel of land with a house. If the house still stands
you should be able to locate it on the upto date Ordnance Survey map.

Fortunately the 1841 census was done close to the time of publication of the
Tythe map. This will enable you to tie up the Tythe roll names with the
census names and if the people have not move between 1837 and 1841 you can
place them in a dwelling with some confidence. Where there are gaps (because
people have moved) you might be able to fill them in by working out the
route of the census enumerator. He may not have gone round in a systematic
way but he might have.

If you look at the subsequent census data you might be able to work out who
lived in some of the houses in the later years because a lot of people,
especially the farmers tended to stay put. You may again be able to fill in
the gaps by working out the enumerator's route, (beware it could be a
different route every census). You can get confirmation that you have got
some of the occupants of the houses correct if you can get a look at the
deeds of the property, (this is difficult, you really have to know the
people living in the houses now and persuade them to let you have a look at
their deeds, if they have them, but most of the deeds are in Building
Society vaults).

You can find out who was living in the houses in 1791 by going to the parish
map and documents used for assessing the Poor Rate. On this map the parcels
of land have a different numbering system from those on the Thythe map.

The above is basically the way I populated the houses in Cocklake as
published in my ebook 'The History of Cocklake'.

I know that Heath House is an area near Wedmore and not an actual house, but
does anyone know how I would find out which house in Heath House someone
lived in ? The baptism records just seem to say Heath House or Heath as
does the census.

Also, how did it come to be named Heath House (Heathhouse) ? Was there once
one big house there owning all the land ?
