Thanks, Stanley, for your good research.  I think gold is not going to be
found where there is lead/silver/ochre/calamine - but the gullible are
always with us.  I grew up in an area where there was a gold rush in the
1850s (Lynn Nunn's ancestor was in the same Australian village as was an
ancestor of mine, back then), so I know all about these old gold mine
stories.  To get to the bottom of this, someone will have to check on the
Mining Journal referred to at the URL to which Stan Mapstone directed us,
or look up JW Gough on Mendip mines.  

Once again, this area of Somerset provides endless fascination!
