Recent postings refer to Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York. I
have a few bits which may be of interest.
William(1790) Gibbs arrived in Jordan, Onondaga County in 1842
with wife Nancy(1790) Wall, sons Joseph(1822) and Charles(1829),
and daughters Ann(1820), Elizabeth(1824) and Mary(1827. A
tradition has it that the family came to Jordan because son
John(1815) was already there, working in a grist mill.
In 1845, John, with a Richard Radway, purchased a grist mill in
Onondaga Hollow town (now within Syracuse). He died in 1846 and
the mill was auctioned. I have nothing further of Richard Radway,
but the name, and the town of Syracuse, may be a clue to someone.
Another son, James(1818) Gibbs, with John(1815), preceeded the
family to America. He somehow found his way to Illinois where he
married and promptly died; his widow Mercy Keel/Kiel/Keil Gibbs,
with two children then came to Jordan, where she married
Joseph(1822)
Joseph and Charles purchased farms in Bremer County, Iowa in 1856;
William came with them and died there in 1862.
