Miller Spearings.
There is a Publication - Mills and Watercourses of the Upper Axe - from
Wookey Hole to Bleadney, B G Luker, Wookey Local History Group. 1991(A4,
56pages +A3 map)
The booklet gives a history of all of the mills. The first mention of
Burcott mill was in1422. From 1766 to 1831 Cornelius Curtis was the
leaseholder and occupier of the mill except in 1819 when it was occupied by
Curtis and Read. In 1832 James Coombs became occupier. In 1833 the mill was
put up for sale. Coombs was still there in 1841 and until he went to Beadney
in 1851. James Underwood became Coombs' under tenant. Fry and Salmon were
tenants in1859. In 1861 there appears to be no one living in the mill and it
was to-let in 1863. By 1864 E A Freeman of Somerleaze had bought the mill.
William Harvey was the miller who was succeeded in 1866 by Richard Whittle.
In 1888 Frank Ellis took over the mill. He was in Kelly's until 1927.
There is no sign of any Spearing.
There is no index in the book but I have scanned it (with my eyes) and the
only Srearing I can find was a William Spearing at Bleadney New Mill (No
dates given)
