The Bell Inn, Banwell A/ATH 1/1-30 A/ATH 1753 - 1991 A/ATH
Deeds relating to the Bell Inn, Church Street, Banwell. The earliest deed
relates to the conveyance of the Bell Inn by James Buller of Shillingham,
Cornwall, Lord of the manor of Banwell Brewton, to Joseph Tuckey of Banwell,
stone cutter, 1753 [1/1]. The Inn remained in the Tuckey family until John
Tuckey, innkeeper, died without an heir and left it to his brother-in-law,
Thomas Wilcox, 1839 [1/4]. Wilcox granted the Inn to James Bradford Crocker
of Banwell, Schoolmaster, 1846 [1/6], who raised a mortgage on the land
[1/7-9]. The Inn was conveyed in 1851 to Samuel LANEY of Banwell, carpenter
[1/10] who later mortgaged the Inn in 1861 to Isaac Webber [1/11]. The
mortgage was transferred in 1866 to Betty Ann Webber, spinster [1/12], and
later reconveyed to Samuel LANEY, 1869 [1/13]. In 1877 LANEY conveyed the
Bell Inn to Richard William Shackel of Burnham, brewer, [1/16], who
subsequently sold the land to William Skinner Holt of South Brent, 1878
[1/20]. The Holt brothers, brewers of Burnham on Sea, purchased the
adjoining plot of land numbered 1212 on the tithe map in 1894 [1/21 -25]. In
1972 the Inn was owned by Whitbread Devon Limited of Tiverton, Devon, when
it was conveyed to Whitbread Flowers Limited of Cheltenham, Gloucestershire,
[1/29]. The title was then transferred to Gilbert Robert Watts and Ann
Elizabeth Watts of Llantrisant, Mid Glamorgan, 1991 [1/30]. (1bundle)

James B. CROCKER
In the death of James B. Crocker, which occurred last Tuesday evening at the
residence of his daughter, Mrs William Adams, Newark, N. J., Waterloo loses
one of its most esteemed and valued citizens. The deceased was born in
Woodborrow, parish of Winscomb, England, March 18, 1821. He was therefore,
73 years and 29 days old at the time of his death. In 1838, when but 17
years old, he first came to this country and for a time settled in New York
city. From there he travelled extensively over the country until 1845, when
he returned to England. There he married his wife one year later, and in the
fall of 1858 they arrived in this country, taking up their residence in
Waterloo. Here they resided continuously, excepting five years - three in
Rochester and two in Canandaigua. Previous to removal to to Rochester, Mr
Crocker was cashier of the first National bank of this place, a position he
held for twenty years. In Rochester he engaged in real estate and in
Canandaigua in banking again. The later position he resigned to accept the
office of cashier of the Waterloo Wagon Company. This was in September. '85,
and he held the place from that time to the day of his death, without so
much as an occasional vacation. His powers of application were marvelous.
Whatever he undertook was done with a directness and efficiency that marked
him as a man of broad intelligence, ripe judgement and rugged honesty, and
fidelity to the duties imposed. Mr Crocker never held public office. He was
the courtly gentleman, kind, dignified and retiring. His friendships and
attachments were of the most enduring character, and his regard and esteem
for others, though not often expressed in public, were frequently spoken of
in the privacy of his family circle. He was a great lover of his home and
all its surroundings. His taste for literature was extensive and liberally
gratified, and he frequently gave readings before local audiences for
charitable and other laudable purposes. He was a Vestryman of St Paul's
Episcopal church for a number of years. Also Superintendant of its Sunday
school. He officiated frequently as lay preacher here and in Trinity church,
Seneca Falls, and was keenly alive to all the best interests of his church.
In fact, to whatever station he was called, he exemplified those qualities
of mind and heart that inspired the confidence and esteem of his fellos, as
well as the approbation of the whole community. In his death the familyis
sorely bereaved of a tender and loving husband and father, the church of a
faithful and consistant communicant, and the village of an estimable and
loyal citizen. The deceased is survived by a widow and nine children James
S. and Charles P. Crocker and Mrs. William Adams, of Newark, N. J., John
Crocker, of New York, William H. Crocker of Montreal, Que., Frederick W.
Crocker, of North Lawrence, N. Y., Miss Alice M. Crocker, of Knoxville,
Tenn., and Geo. E. Crocker and Miss Fannie A. Crocker, of this place. The
funeral was held on Thursday, with services at St. Paul's church, and burial
in the family plot in Maple Grove cemetery.
