Dear Wedmore Listers

A week ago my wife Pam and I flew from Canberra to Melbourne then hired =
a car to drive to Ballarat=20
to join a group of us from the Australian National University Emeritus =
Faculty to "celebrate" the 150th=20
anniversary of the Eureka Stockade uprising of the Ballarat miners =
against the government of the colony of Victoria. Some of us tended to =
sympathise more with the government although the main thrust was to =
celebrate the miners,as their rising did lead to an extension of the =
suffrage to all men (except Chinese and aborigines of course!)! But =
there's=20
no doubt the government was over-reacting to what was basically a =
demonstration against the mining licence fee of about =A31 a month - the =
battle lasted just 20 minutes after which 22+ miners were dead and at =
least 5 of the troopers, including to
my surprise and distress (as I am a descendant of so many Wedmore Walls) =
one Joseph Wall, aged 22.

The splendid encyclopaedia brought out as part of the celebration says =
he was born in Wedmore, son of Joseph Wall. I already had his baptism =
from John Hayward's transcriptions of Wedmore baptisms after 1812, on =
10 April 1832,=20
when his parents Joseph and Susanna were living in Heath House just =
outside Wedmore. His parents are still in Heath at the 1851 Census, and =
young Joseph was next door, working for the Roe's.

Can any Wedmore Listers tell me more of Joseph Wall (born about 1800) =
and his wife Susanna, living in Heath House, Wedmore, between 1822 and =
1851? There seems to be no record in Wedmore of this Joseph's birth, but =
I would like to think he was a son of Jonathan Wall and Hannah Binning, =
also of Heath House, who were having children baptised in Wedmore before =
and after 1800 but may have overlooked Joseph!=20

Poor young Joseph their son died on the day of the battle itself, 3 Dec =
1854, of wounds in his abdomen from one of the miner's pikes; a private =
in the 40th Regiment, he had enlisted on 15 October 1852, Wall Drive in =
the Ballarat
cemetery is named after him. Another Joseph Wall was one of the miners - =
could this have been his father? Oddly enough - albeit not so surprising =
- some of the Irish Curtains (of Clare so perhaps only distantly related =
to my Curtins of Cork) were ringleaders of the miners.

Ballarat is a splendid 19th century town with hardly any nods to later =
centuries - no high rises, so very human scale. There were re-enactments =
of the miners' march to the Stockade, and of the soldiery's march at =
dawn on
the Sunday - and then a grand lunch, with Australia's former PM Gough =
Whitlam giving the=20
main speech.

Our ANU Emeritus "team leader" Giles Pickford at this anniversary is as =
it happens also a putative cousin of=20
mine - his grandfather Lancelot Giles was a defender at the Siege of =
Peking and these Giles trace back to the Giles of Wedmore (1600-1700) =
and Mark (1700-1800); William Giles of Southwick House in Mark married =
Ann the daughter of Francis Giblett of High Hall in Mark in 1752, who =
may well be related to my mother's Meare Gibletts.

Any further info on the above would be most welcome!
