Subject: [WED]Stook House & Rose Farm.
I know Stook House very well it is an isolated small-holding near =
some of my land. When I was a child it was coccupied by three maiden =
ladies named Tucker. It is now owned by the daughter and son in law of =
my neighbour.
Rose Farm is in a hamlet of Mark called Yarrow, I hardly ever go =
there so I can't say I know it.
The following are extracts from a book called "Mark, a Somerset =
moorland village" by Pamela M. Slocombe.
Stook House.
Plot 758 on TA. Called Stew House on maps of 1817 & 1822. Situated =
on the Shipham Rhine (a large man made ditch) & the Mark Yeo (a larger =
man made ditch). One of the few houses regularly named in documents and =
printed sources.
1808 Thomas Wall of Stook House died.
1849 TA. owner Hannah Batt, occupier George Wall.
1849 will of Hannah Batt proved.
1861-1866 D. George Wall.
1872 D. George Toogood.
1883 D. George Wall, farmer, Little Moor (area where the house is =
situated).
1906-7 PC. George Wall.
1914-1919 D. Walter Sheppard, farmer.
1913-1939 D. Herbert Tucker, farmer.
Miss Tucker died c. 1996. family came from Mudgley, related to Percy =
Drake, baker.
House being re-roofed and renovated 1997.
Rose Farm.
Plot 731 on TA. Brick, end on to road.
1841 TA. owner/occupier Thomas West.
1844 ER. Thomas West, freehold house and land, Yarrow, occupied by =
self.
1851 C. Thomas West, aged74, farmer of 14 acres.
1861-83 D. perhaps Mark Wall, farmer , Yarrow.
1873 owners of land Mark Wall 25a 2r 11p (area of land).
1881 C. perhaps Mark Wall, aged 64, farmer of 15 acres.
1889 D. perhaps Mrs. Mark Wall, farmer Yarrow.
1889-1897 D. George Wall, farmer, Yarrow (after Stook House).
1923-1931 D. George Wall (had two sons who went to USA and returned, =
niece Florrie kept house JS).
1937-1939 D. Frank Wall, farmer Rose Farm.
1960s (cutting) Frank Webber.
1989 for sale with 19 acres, Mr & Mrs E.F. Webber retiring.
