The Wedmore Chronicles were a series of occasional articles written by =
the then vicar of Wedmore, Rev. Sydenham H.A. Hervey, between 1880 and =
1898. The subjects covered varied, as did his interests, including =
cricket, bell ringing, an archeaological dig at Mudgley Manor, an =
obituary of his father who was then Bishop of Bath & Wells, baptisms, =
marriages and burials at the time including those at non conformist =
churches and other matters of general interest. These articles were =
later published in two bound volumes.
Rev. Hervey was a very clever man, but he has sometimes been criticised =
for being more interested in matters other than the Church. His =
grandfather was an Earl of Bristol, with a very large Stately Home in =
Suffolk, called Ickfield. Politically he was an (English) Liberal, =
whereas Wedmore was a very Conservative village. At one time he chaired =
a political meeting on behalf of the Liberal Party, eggs were thrown and =
the meeting was broken up. Rev. Hervey took a dim view of this behaviour =
in the village and resigned as vicar; he was only in his early 50s.
The New Wedmore Chronicles is a book published in 2002 by Hazel Hudson. =
It is mainly local history and was originally written as a series of =
articles for The Wedmore Parish Magazine. Hazel is still writing =
historical articles for the magazine. The most recent are on Inns in the =
Wedmore area.
