[WED]Land Proprietor? Evans family

Hi,
     Can someone tell me what is a land proprietor?  The 1861 census lists my 
3rd great grandfather William Evans 67,born Cheddar, as one.  Also, where 
would I look to see when he and his wife Elizabeth 62, born Wedmore, were born 
and when they died?  Family notes say that he was 90 when he died, but I do not 
know if that is accurate or not. I also do not know Elizabeth's maiden name. 
>From the information I have gathered, the children of William and Elizabeth 
Evans all emigrated to the U.S.  Rather sad that they never met their 
grandchildren.
