Hello all,
I submitted the following several days ago, but have not seen it
actually posted on the Wedmore site. Thus, I am resubmitting it. Apologies
if this was, in fact, posted previously and somewhow I missed it.
Mel
Thank you both, Matthew and John. Your information does help, and I will try
to pursue it further. Just by explanation of how this works with my line,
John Kingston was the illegitimate child of Ann Kingston who later married
John Phippen. John and Ann were my g-g grandparents; John Kingston thus was
half-brother of my great gradmother Eliza Phippen. Matthew, on the parish
records of John Kingston's marriage to Elizabeth Duckett, it does indeed say
that John is the son of John Phippen, but it also specifies that he was
illegitimate. This was John Kingston's second marriage. Though he says he
was widowed on the parish records, his first wife left him and came to
America with someone else. The Hembury name seems to make sense for
Elizabeth Duckett's nee, since a John Henbury was a witness at the wedding
in 1873.
I, too, cannot find John and Elizabeth in the 1881 census or any other
one after that, under either name. All I have found is Ellen Duckett, 13,
servant in the home of John and Mary Ann Porter, Wedmore, in 1881, and Sarah
Duckett, 19, servant, home of Andrew Knowles, Wedmore, also 1881. A search
for them in America has also been unsuccessful.
Thanks again, and let me know if you can use any further information
from me.
Mel
