This is our direct branch on my mother's side - I'm doing this from memory as
I have let the family history lapse for over 10 years.
Regards Benjamin Coombes Mapstone, try West Pennard for the baptism records.
It seems his father, Robert Coombes Mapstone was farming there for a number
of years before returning to Wedmore.
If you have his death certificate ( Benjamin's) you will most likely wonder
why or how he died - it describes him as being run over by a couple of trucks
!!!
It took me 2 1/2 days of solid research at the British Newspaper Library near
Hendon , North London to find an entry in one of the local newspapers.
Apparently, Benjamin, a carpenter, was pulling the trucks ( these must have
been some form of small flat-bed "buggies" ) and while pulling these trucks
he swung out from the side of the lane to go around a pile of rocks that were
partly obstructing his way when a horse drawn buggy coming from behind
collided with the trucks and Benjamin must have ended up underneath all this.
The attending physician was a Dr.Ford.
Ok, I,ve just pulled out the binder containing his death certificate - it
states;
Died: 21,November.1873. Age:43 yrs. Occupation: Carpenter. Cause of Death:
Died from injuries recieved on the 30th, September. All caused by a pair of
trucks accidentally falling upon him.
Information recieved from Samual Craddock; Coroner for the County of
Somerset, Shepton Mallet. Inquest held on the 27th, November. 1873.
The rest of the previous information I had gleaned from the newspaper report.
This is Julia Coombes Maptone's father - Julia later marrying Stephen Millard
and the Council Bluffs connection.
In the 1871 cencus it is correct that she is shown as staying with her
brother, Robert, most likely as a consequence of the premature death of her
father, Benjamin.
Best Regards
Martin Field.
