Hello Mary (Jakes),

Here are some comments on your musings:

Wedmore and Weare are not on high ground. Weare church is 10 metres above
sea level and Wedmore church is about 26 metres asl. The highest part of the
Isle of Wedmore, which separates to two places, is about 58 metres asl.

Harvey counted up the marriages in Wedmore with one participant from Weare
(16) and Meare (34), there would probably be a similar number of marriages
in those places too.

Before the Turnpike road was made in 1828 the main route from Wedmore to
Axbridge was via Weare.

The Bronze Age trackways across the moor used fairly substantial timber and
not brushwood.

Day and Masters map of 1782 shows roads between Wedmore and Weare and
Wedmore and Meare and these roads still exist today but of course they are
more roadworthy now. Before the turnpikes the roads were primitive and they
were probably only passable with difficulty for some parts of the year.
