Mary, like you I have been fascinated learning about the roads because it is all
new to me. We have been wondering what the "ropes" are that were in the e-mail
from Stanley "Mainly Cocklake Names"--like "5 ropes", "8 ropes", "36 ropes".
Does anyone know what this refers to related to the roads? We are curious if
people who laid these "ropes" might have been called "Ropers" at an earlier time
since I am descended from Ropers (William to Hugh). Does anyone know? How about
you Roger? Know that my Shepherd ancestors were originally keepers of sheep so
wondered if this might be the same.

Also, Mary, it would seem to me that if Michael could make access to the maps
over the net it would be really great for all of us! Right now it looks like I
am going to have to look at more villages between Wedmore and Leigh upon Mendip
to see if I can find a baptism for my George Tincknell (b. abt 1821) and I
haven't a clue about where to look, so a map from that time frame would be
wonderful!
Thanks,
Sandi McGinnis
