Dear Stanley,
Many thanks indeed! Our family always wondered why JPP came to NZ. I am =
glad my mother is no longer alive as I would hate to have to tell her!!! =
JPP's wife Mary Victoria Curtis, was a school masters daughter whose =
father was then teaching at Shipham. When she married John Pople Porter, =
she was told by Mrs.Porter that she felt sorry for John because she =
didn't think Nana would make a very good farmers wife. As it turned out =
she did not know my grandmother.!! Now that you say that about JPP, it =
rings a bell. I recall somewhere, someone talking about JPP being a =
gambler.
In fact the family gossip from Nana;'s side of the family was that JPP =
had got a servant girl pregnant! and he had to leave town. JPP and Nana =
had 4 children by then. When JPP decided to come to NZ with his brother =
in law George Curtis, Nana went to her father who by this time was =
teaching in Desborough. The family stayed with him for 2 years and, we =
are told, Mr Curtis ended up paying her's and the childrens fares to NZ. =
because he couldn't afford to have them at home with him anymore!
So all in all perhaps bad debts are less of sin than the other!!!!!.
My grandmother was a very upright sort of person...played the organ at =
church, vestry member, musical and was well read. She was highly =
respected in the community, as was Grandpa. He didn't gamble in NZ. The =
family in UK always seemed to think that they had became very wealthy, =
but the facts were different. They worked very hard for what they had =
and were grateful for the Old Age Pension in old age, altho my =
grandmother refused to take it believing that she had could support =
herself and should support herself. Nana always seemed rather sad and =
perhaps her early life with grandpa caused it.
Did Ann Amesbury tell you she received a letter from me? I am sorry she =
knows no more about the Porters.I was hoping to track the Porters back =
further than Henry Porter's father John.=20
Your comment about only cattle on Kelsons Farm was right. Had forgotten =
that. It was dairy cows too.
Here is a transcript of the letter Ernest wrote to JPP:
" Kelsons Farm,
Wedmore,.
October 4th 1915
Dear John,
I do not know if a letter has passed between us since you left England, =
but I do not know why. They say no news is better than bad news which I =
think is quite correct. I am afraid it is bad news that induces me to =
write now [ he goes on to write of Agnes's illness and his own plus the =
loss of a baby girl at 9 months.]
Hope you and wife and family have met with better fate as regards =
health.=20
Kelsons Farm is still the same old drudge. Plenty of payments to keep =
good. If you have made you [r] pile in New Zealand come back and buy it =
of us. We are making very good prices of milk now but everything else is =
so dear that it more than counter-balances it. Under mentioned price for =
last contract [follows a list of prices for that year improving from =
April at 7 3/4 to Mar 9/1/4] how does that tally with NZ prices.
You probably think I have absconded altogether as I have not sent you =
any of those payments. If you will let me know how to manage it I will =
send them on up to this michaelmas. Has your family increased any We now =
have five, two boys and three girls........Is Vick, your wife, stronger =
than she used to be. When Agnes is a little stronger I will ask her to =
write to her....[goes on to write briefly of the war]
Hoping to hear you are all well and happy.
Your sincere Bro
E.Duckett."
My mother said she was born at Kelsons Farm (1907).=20
Where exactly is Bay Tree Farm? I found what I thought was Bay Tree Farm =
several years ago but time was short and I had to leave.Did visit =
Kelsons Farm and met the people there.
JPP brought with him to NZ a pewter mug beautifully engraved on which =
were the following words:
AD1845
Mr.John Porter, on becoming Tenant(yearly) of the
Catcott Manor Farm, Somersetshire,
ofhis own accord planted 108 Fruit trees.
The family presumed this would have been JPP's grandfather and it is him =
and beyond that I am trying to trace.I think it is great hearing these =
stories. It puts flesh on the bones so to speak!
Rest assured, no defamation case is ensuing!

Dear Katherine,
=20
My neighbour Ann Amesbury shares your great grandfather. Her =
grandmother was Agnes Porter, sister of your grandfather John Pople =
Porter.
=20
Unfortunately she knows very little about the Porters.
=20
The family tales here in Wedmore about John Pople Porter's antics =
differ from yours.
=20
John Pople Porter and his sister got equal shares in Bay Tree Farm =
Cocklake when their mother Hannah Porter died. Hannah Porter had =
inherited it from her mother Hannah Pople. John Pople Porter's sister =
Agnes married Ernest Duckett and they went to live at Kelson's Farm. It =
had been in the hands of the Porter family and was passed on to Agnes =
(and Ernest Duckett). Agnes gave her share of Bay Tree Farm to her =
brother John Pople Porter (Perhaps for his share of Kelson's farm?).
=20
John Pople Porter appears to have been a bit of a gambler (so the =
story goes) and in 1910 he raised a mortgage of =A3350 on Bay Tree farm =
in 1905 to pay gambling debts. He then sold the property to Wyndham =
Pople for =A3420. He paid off the mortgage so he was left with =A370. He =
probably used the =A370 for his passage to New Zealand (Leaving other =
debts behind?). It is said that he sold a parcel of land opposite =
Kelson's Farm to his brother-in-law Ernest Duckett but not the farm =
because it wasn't his to sell.
=20
There was no wool on Kelson's Farm, the kept only cattle!
=20
=20
In 1897 (Kelly's Directory) Halfway farm, Cocklake was in the hands of =
one William Porter Jnr and it had had its name changed to Glendale Farm. =
(It is still called Glendale farm.)
=20
Hope the above is of interest and that you do not want to sue me for =
deformation of character!!

Greetings from Downunder!
I am in possession of the family tree you did for the Poples as I am a =
descendant of them. Many thanks.
Do you know anything about the Porter Family of Wedmore? They were =
farmers ( but gossip has it they were also inn keepers - Highbridge?) =
and my grandfather John Pople Porter, owned Kelsons Farm before he =
emigrated to New Zealand. He sold it to his brother in law Ernest =
Duckett at the turn of the century before he came to NZ in 1910.Not sure =
that he ever paid for it because the bottom dropped out of wool prices =
and Ern wrote to my grandfather apologizing for not paying what he owed. =
He may have paid up later!!
Mr grandfathers mother was Hannah Pople m. Henry Porter. The Porters =
are hard to trace back. Catcott may have been where they came from.
I am going to be staying with Sue Hembury Kellow so I may give you a =
call.
