While I can't solve the question you are asking, I can offer you some =
information about Philip Chapman which may be of interest. As you may =
already have found, the Wedmore Parish Register records the baptism of =
"Robert Yestcomb son of Philip Chapman" on 29 April 1777. And on 22 =
September 1792 "Robert Yescombe Chapman" married Hannah Champeney.
The use of a second Christian name in this way is I think unique for =
this period in Wedmore. I believe it reflects a long association between =
the Yescombe and Chapman families, whereby the Chapmans were the main =
tenants of Yescombe family farmland in Blackford near Wedmore, which at =
that time was owned by Robert Yescombe (1738-1815).
In 1780, following the financial ruin of the Yescombes in the 1770's, =
all the family land was sold, mostly at an auction held on 20 November =
at Cross, Somerset. (See "Felix Farley's Bristol Journal" for 21 =
October, 28 October, 4 November and 11 November 1780.) This included the =
following land tenanted by Philip Chapman, including his house:
Lot 4. (in Fee Simple) - An Overland of Meadow or Pasture, situate in =
the Parish of Wedmore, in said County of Somerset, by Estimation 9 =
Acres, (be the same more or less) in the Occupation of Mr. Philip =
Chapman, at the yearly Rent of 10l. (that is to say)
1. Tinknell's Spakemoor and More Orchard [4 acres 0 roods]
2. In Browning's Spakemore (with one Acre in the Duke of Chandos's) =
[5 0]
Lot 5. (in Fee Simple) - An Overland, situate in Wedmore aforesaid, of =
Land, Meadow, and Pasture, by Estimation 9 Acres, (be the same more or =
less) in the Occupation of said Philip Chapman, at the yearly Rent of =
7l. 2s. 6d. (that is to say)
1. Brunkill [4 0]
2. In Castle [2 0]
3. In North and Sand Field [3 0]
Lot 12. - A Copyhold Messuage and Tenement of Old Auster, with several =
Closes or Pieces of Meadow and Pasture Land, by estimation 17 Acres, =
situate at Blackford, in the Parish of Wedmore, held under the Trustees =
of Bruton Hospital, for three Lives, subject to a Lord's Rent of 8s. per =
Ann. and the best Beast for an herriott, in the Occupation of said =
Philip Chapman and others, that is to say
1. Messuage and Tenement of Old Auster, & Orchards [2 0]
2. Townsend [3 0]
3. Clayfield [2 1]
4. In Middle Braddy [4 0]
5. In East Ditto [1 0]
6. In East Field [2 0]
7. In Castle [0 2]
8. In Whethington's new Inclosure [2 2]
[17 0 in total]
A rood is 1/4 of an acre. "Old Auster" rights were the rights to graze =
cattle on the common land, in this case on Mark Moor, which was just =
about to be enclosed (the enclosed land was then distributed to owners =
of the Old Auster rights).
The connection between the Yescombes and Chapmans can be traced back =
further than this however. On 23 December 1718 three children were =
baptised at Wedmore:
- Edmund, the son of Robert Yescombe (1654-1719) [his father then being =
65 and his mother 46]
- Elizabeth, the daughter of Thomas Tucker, whose wife was Joan (b. =
1693), the eldest daughter of the same Robert Yescombe
- Phebe the daughter of William Chapman (Phebe died a week later. =
William Chapman is described as being of Blackford in other parish =
register entries of the period.)
I believe the Yescombes were already renting out their land in Blackford =
by this time, and I don't think it was a coincidence that a Chapman =
joined what was clearly a Yescombe family occasion.
When Philip Chapman named his son Philip Yescombe in 1777, he was =
probably already aware that the Yescombe family fortunes were in ruins, =
and I think it was a rather poignant last gesture of loyalty after an =
association between the families which went back at least 60 years. For =
the background to these events see my write-up of the family history on =
my website -
http://www.yescombe.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/yescombe.htm.
Incidentally you have little chance of finding any Chapman wills - the =
Somerset wills were destroyed by enemy action while in Exeter castle =
(where they had been moved for safety) during the Second World War. Only =
a limited number of transcriptions made before the war remain.

Subject: [WED]CHAPMAN and LEIGH
Is anyone else, perchance, researching the families of Philip CHAPMAN =
and Ann LEIGH, who married at Wedmore on 6th September 1763? I am =
having nightmares trying to resolve dates, parentage, etc., and am =
hoping that someone else may have been able to make greater sense of the =
available data than I have.
The only Philip CHAPMAN I have found that may fit was baptised in =
1722, making him at least 41 when he married; as this seems slightly =
"mature" for a (presumably) first marriage, I'm a bit uncertain as to =
whether or not he is "my" Philip CHAPMAN. His wife, Ann LEIGH (again =
assuming I've got the right one) was baptised in 1733, making her at =
least 33 when she married - again somewhat more "mature" than the norm.
Their daughter, Sabra/Sebra CHAPMAN is described as being "age 2" at =
her baptism in 1793; this I have been able to prove wrong. She was =
described as being aged 70 years at her death in 1849, so her newly =
calculated birth date of 1779 gives her a marriage age of 27/28. With =
these figures, her mother Ann would have been about 46 when Sabra was =
born, much more believable than the previously projected age of 60!
Many thanks for reading this - even more thanks will be available for =
resolving it!

The only Philip CHAPMAN I have found =
that may fit=20
was baptised in 1722, making him at least 41 when he married; as this =
seems=20
slightly "mature" for a (presumably) first marriage, I'm a bit =
uncertain as to=20
whether or not he is "my" Philip CHAPMAN. His wife, Ann LEIGH =
(again=20
assuming I've got the right one) was baptised in 1733, making her at =
least 33=20
when she married - again somewhat more "mature" than the =
norm.

Their daughter, Sabra/Sebra CHAPMAN =
is described=20
as being "age 2" at her baptism in 1793; this I have been able to =
prove=20
wrong. She was described as being aged 70 years at her death in =
1849, so=20
her newly calculated birth date of 1779 gives her a marriage age of=20
27/28. With these figures, her mother Ann would have been about =
46 when=20
Sabra was born, much more believable than the previously projected age =
of 60!
