No I doubt if the sale of Robert Yescombe's land meant that Philip =
Chapman was thrown out into the snow. The buyer of the land, as the =
newspaper advertisement makes clear, was buying it as an investment to =
yield an income, and therefore would have been quite happy to leave a =
good tenant on the land. I have calculated that the whole Yescombe =
estate (not just Philip Chapman's land) sold in 1780 was worth around =
=A35800, and would have yielded a total income of around =A3350 p.a., =
which was a perfectly adequate income on which to live as a country =
gentleman at that time.

Ah ha!! Again, that would never have occurred to me, but naturally =
the sale of Robert Yescombe's property must have had a horrendous impact =
upon the Chapmans - home and livelihood gone. I assume Philip Chapman =
did move? Is there any way of checking to where, and when?
