Hi group,
Some information on the Pitmans. George Pitman born at Godney =
married Flora Wilkins at Bristol in Apr 1825. They resided at Edington , =
Somerset and had a number of children. Three of their sons that I am =
aware of emigrated to Dubuque County , Iowa.
They are Samuel Pitman baptized at Edington 13 Apr 1829. He married =
Eleanor Wilkins probably a relative of his mothers at Buffalo , N.Y. Two =
of their sons married Wedmore girls , namely Albert John Wilkins Pitman =
born 1853 whose second wife was Edith Jane Wall my fourth cousin three =
times removed and the daughter of Arthur and Mary Wall. This Arthur =
baptized 20 Apr 1845 is a son of William Taverner Wall that married his =
second cousin Elizabeth Wall at Wedmore in 1829. Another son Edwin =
Wilkins Pitman born 1858 married Jane Duckett my fifth cousin two times =
removed the daughter of Edward Duckett and Sarah Durston. I believe =
Edward and Sarah and family emigrated to Iowa at the end of the Civil =
War. Edith Janes sister Elizabeth passed through Ellis Island about the =
turn of the century where she states she is going to her sister Mrs. A. =
Pitman of Dyersville , Iowa. She has a daughter with her although she is =
unmarried. I do not know if she was on a vacation or immigrating.
William Pitman the third son of George and Flora baptized at =
Edington on 20 Aug 1831 also emigrated to Iowa and his daughter Amelia =
Elizabeth born about 1862 became the second wife of John Green Comer. =
John Green Comers first wife apparently was Mary Ann Wall the brother of =
the Arthur Wall mentioned earlier although no one has provided any =
marriage information or other proof.
The third son of George and Flora Pitman that emigrated to Iowa =
was Henry George Pitman born about 1834 at Edington. He married Eliza =
Durston my fourth cousin three times removed the daughter of George =
Durston and Phoebe Evans that married at Wedmore on 6 Oct 1838. This =
Eliza Durston is a younger sister of the Sarah Durston mentioned above. =
Anna a daughter of Henry George and Eliza Pitman born about 1873 married =
Frederick J. Binning a son of Charles H. Binning and Mary Ann Carver =
another Somerset family.
I assume their is no marriage of a Jane Baker Toogood to a William =
Wall circa 1859 to support my previously stated theory?
Regards,=20
