With reference to mining in the Wedmore area; in the nineteenth century most
quarrying for building stone was done locally. The nearest coal mines are in
North Somerset and iron mines in the Brendon Hills in South Somerset. I do
not think they would have much influence on Wedmore. Anybody with mining
skills would have to have picked them up outside of the immediate area.
Although Wedmore is very close to the carboniferous limestone of Cheddar, it
is curious that hardly any of the houses are made of it, most are of the
local Jurassic limestone ( this quarry ceased production many years ago) or
of blue lias that comes from the Polden hills to the south. Mathew.
