In reviewing some of the Dyer letters written about the time of emigration:

August 1847: James Plaister to his brother in law, James Dyer jr.:
Mrs. Miller's sons of Kilson Farm, Wedmore recieved a letter from their
brother who went last spring, and accounts are so good they have waived
themselves out of their farm and are going. .. Miller's brother is at
Norris near Wisconsin. George Gibbs and his father are going from
Wedmore... Durston... had taken berths for the 16th on the old Cosmo. They
intend sailing next week..."

Letter of December 4 1847, Plaister to James Dyer jr.
We have rec'd good a/cs from Gadd, Norris & Ducket in Burlington in
Wisconsin and from Burge Cobb of Cross who says there are many estates in
their neighborhood for sale, partly cultivated, from 20 to 50 acres with
house on it, and recommend his own family ... to look out for such a
thing....

James Dyer Jr. went from Lysander NY to Beloit Wisconsin before going down
to Iowa to look over the land. It would be interesting to look at the 1850
Census for Beloit to see who the other Englishmen were there at the time.
