Dear Tim,

Many thanks for the information.

I will know for certain when I receive the certificates, but although I am
half expecting Charles and the George you mention, to be the sons of
Charles and Ann - (Tim Clapp's father thinks that the father is Charles),
unless George was a bigamist (which is unlikely in such an intimate
locality) : ), I think Harriet Spearing's first husband will turn out to be
a different George Clapp.  There are two Harriet Clapp's in the 1881 census;
one the daughter of the George and Emma

Will let you know when I have information from the certificates, if you
would be interested.

Of course, the other interesting thing is that IF Charles and Harriet's
first husband were brothers, it would not have been legal for Charles and
Harriet to marry at that time (although plenty of people ignored that law).
I have not yet found a reference to their marriage - or to the birth of
Charles Spearing Clapp. They went on to have at least 2 other children,
James and Mary, and each time they used Spearing as a middle name.

Perhaps we have uncovered a family scandal!! What fun :)

Many thanks again

Susan
