If you read Flora Thompson's "Lark Rise to Candleford", it tells you =
all about the maternity bag. It contained basic things needed following =
the birth of a baby. It would be on loan for a given time, by which =
time things could be procured for the baby (which would have grown out =
of the smallest things anyway)
When so many babies didn't make is past a few weeks, and people were so =
hard up, it meant that precious resources weren't used for what could =
turn out to be a futile purpose.

Subject: [WED]Maternity bag?
Hi everyone!
I was at the Somerset Record Office yesterday looking at the records =
of what is catalogued as the records of a "?Friendly Society". The names =
listed are all female and detail the loan of a bag, numbered 1, 2 or 3, =
which was loaned to the named woman for on average about a month, and =
then returned. Dates of loan and return are listed, as is the condition =
the bag was returned in - clean, not clean, etc. There is also a record =
of monies paid, usually around 2s.The catalogue entry says it is "also =
used as account book of a maternity club with articles lent for =
lying-in" - presumably this is the bag referred to. Does anyone know =
what the bag would have contained?=20
Many thanks
Liz
