Hi everyone!

I was at the Somerset Record Office yesterday looking at the records of what is catalogued as the records of a "?Friendly Society". The names listed are all female and detail the loan of a bag, numbered 1, 2 or 3, which was loaned to the named woman for on average about a month, and then returned. Dates of loan and return are listed, as is the condition the bag was returned in - clean, not clean, etc. There is also a record of monies paid, usually around 2s.The catalogue entry says it is "also used as account book of a maternity club with articles lent for lying-in" - presumably this is the bag referred to. Does anyone know what the bag would have contained?

Many thanks
Liz
