Dear John hayward, Grant McIntyre, and Susan Baines,
Thank you for your emails: my James Dyer, the immigrant, and father of =
the James Dyer who founded Dyersville IA, was born on 17 feb 1794, son =
of James Dyer and Mary Sperrin. His father was the son of William and =
Betty --- Dyer, born in Burrington 14 feb 1754. He married Mary Sperrin =
of Flax Bourton on 3 April 1775 who died before 1808 when he married in =
Yatton as his second wife Grace Burnett, widow. This James Dyer died in =
Banwell on 15 February 1821, he appears to have been living with his son =
James b. 1794 after Grace Burnett's death.
James Dyer b. 1794, was married in Yatton? to Mary ---- who was the =
mother of James of Dyersville IA, who died on 28 May 1823. (I am =
curious to find out her maiden name, and have found no record of their =
marriage. I have a "trick" drinking cup which has James, their son's =
initials a JMD, and 1820, his date of birth, so suspect it may have =
begun with M, but have no proof) He married as his second wife Jane =
Harden of Lorton, moved to Wedmore where she is buried, and married on =
28 dec 1831 Hester Tyley of Wedmore, daughter of William Tyley, who =
emigrated with him to Iowa, where she, like him, lived to a ripe old =
age. At the time of her death, they had been married 57 years and never =
a day apart!!!
Efforts to find out more about the family of Mary Sperrin have not =
proved definitive: there was a John Sperrin in Yatton who may have been =
her brother, who may have been the reason they moved to Yatton. I have =
a list of Sperrins in Flax Bourton, were they siblings? and do you have =
the same?
I look forward to hearing from you,
Many thanks,
Mary Thacher
