If George's parents were George Pople and Sarah Lovell, you could try
looking on the 1851 for a William POPLE of about the right age. Sometimes
people concealed their real names from census enumerator to avoid any
ambarrasment associated with an illgitimate birth further back in the family
tree.
Bit of a long shot but may be worth a try!
The confusion on possible birth dates for William may arise from the fact
that George Lovell was baptised at Wedmore in 1833, which would make him far
too young to have a child born in 1840. However, it may be that he was BORN
many years before 1833 and not baptised until then. Again, the 1851 should
help.
