Hi Martin

A free alternative is the FreeBMD site for 1837-1911, which contains fully 
searchable transcripts of the indexes rather than images of the index 
volumes themselves.

Although not all the births, marriages and deaths have been uploaded yet, 
most are already there. An added feature is that you can find out the 
surname of a spouse from the marriage indexes if you already know the 
forename.
