This enquiry originated from my second cousin in Canada. For those of =
you keeping records, I have a couple of corrections. Thomas Duckett and =
Martha Pearce were married in Winford not Bedminster. Percy Duckett died =
of a "tropical disease" not from injuries. Thirdly Thomas and Martha did =
not have a son Michael (there was a Wilfred Michael who died as an =
infant in 1879). Thomas's father was Michael as was one of his brothers.
Although Percy was supposed to have gone to South Africa to take part in =
The Jameson Raid, there was never any family indication that he was =
involved, or that he was in any fighting of any sort. I have one of his =
letters, that was sent home to his mother. It is in verse and is rather =
sad as he was clearly home-sick. I have a second letter sent to him, not =
long before he went overseas, from a young lady "Emily from Sand, =
Wedmore". There is no clear suggestion of a close relationship on her =
side, but it is reproving and suggests a parting. As it is in some ways =
trivial, it is curious that it has survived. Researches of the 1891 =
census indicate that she may have been Emily Starr aged 20, daughter of =
John & Matilda Starr (both 53). I know nothing more of this family.
Matthew Duckett.
