Petty Session, Yesterday, (before Major LAW, Major LONG, Rev .J.A. YATMAN,
Messrs. SOMERS and WILLS M.P.)

John BISHOP, a youth, was ordered to find sureties to keep the peace, he
having been guilty of disorderly conduct at Mark while the congregation were
leaving the parish church, whereby they were annoyed and inconvenienced.

Robert MILKINS was summoned for assaulting J. WEBBER at Wedmore, on July
23rd, and breaking his leg; a cross-summons charged WEBBER with assaulting
MILKINS at the same time and place. WEBBER's version of this affair was that
on the evening of the day in question - Wedmore fair day- some one struck
him with a stick, and on his knocking the offender down, several others,
including MILKINS, "set" on him, and in the row his leg sustained a compound
fracture. P.C. GIBSON proved pulling MILKINS off WEBBER, who was on the
ground, whilst holding him he (MILKINS) deliberately kicked WEBBER several
times, on which the latter exclaimed that his leg was broken. The defence
was that WEBBER had challenged several men to fight, that he had knocked
down several by way of amusement, but on his assaulting MILKINS he (MILKINS)
returned the blow, but he denied having kicked WEBBER. The bench fined
WEBBER as the originator of the row 5s., and costs, and, as a mark of their
disgust at the cowardly conduct of MILKINS, fined him 20s, and costs.

The Mark Elopement Case - Elizabeth CRIDLING was charged with doing wilful
damage to the property of her husband by breaking 20 panes of glass in his
cottage at mark, on September 4th. The defendant, it will be remembered, a
few months since eloped with a young man, and was apprehended in Bristol. At
that time her husband - who is old enough to be her grandfather - promised
to forgive his wife if she would return home and live happily, since which
time she had done anything but fulfil the latter condition of her promise.
Defendant now pleaded guilty, and was fiend 6d 10s damage, and costs, and
cautioned as to her future behaviour towards her husband.
