Petty Sessions, Yesterday (before Col. LUTTRELL, Major LAW, Major LONG,
Messrs W.H. HAFORD, C.L.F. EDWARDS, W.H .WILLS, M.P. and B. SEMORE)
Eliza TINCKNELL was summoned by Jane HEAL , of Cocklake, Wedmore, for using
threatening language towards her. Mr. BRICE defended, and asked that the
above and a summons in which John POPLE was summoned for assaulting Eliza
TINCKNELL might be heard together, The magistrates coincided. In the first
case HEAL said TINCKNELL used very violent language towards her without the
least provocation; in the second case it was stated that whilst TINCKNELL
was going to her home on September 15th, on passing HEAL's residence,
someone threw something out of the window at her. On her turning around to
see who it was, HEAL and POPLE, who lodges with her came out, the latter
subsequently following her and assaulting her with his crutch, striking her
across the arm and abdomen with it, whereby she had been obliged to place
herself under medical care. The defence was that no blow was struck, but
that TINCKNELL injured herself by falling over a scarper. The bench
dismissed the summons against TINCKNELL, and fined POPLE 40s and costs,
designating his conduct as most cowardly,
Seventeen summonses were issued against parents for non-compliance with the
requirements of the Elementary Education Act. The several offences were
proved by Mr ELLIOTT, school attendance officer, and fines varying from 1s
to 5s were imposed.
